What The Red Inn Is About
Travellers stranded on a snowbound mountain road decide to spend the night at a lonely inn. The monk among them learns that the innkeepers have spent years poisoning their guests, robbing them and burying them out the back. He learns it in the confessional, which means he cannot repeat a word of it, and the entire comedy grows out of that knot. Claude Autant-Lara's anticlerical humour caused an argument in 1951, and Fernandel remains the best face ever cast for helplessness. The story draws on a real inn murder case in the Ardeche, and was remade in 2007.
