What Sylvia and the Ghost Is About

Sylvie is turning sixteen. Hanging in the castle is a portrait of Alain, her grandmother's suitor, who was killed in a duel over her years before, and Sylvie is fixed on the painting. Her father, needing cash to hold on to the castle, sells it, and then hires three men to play the ghost and keep his daughter occupied. What none of them knows is that Alain's ghost really is walking the corridors. Claude Autant-Lara adapted it from Alfred Adam's play, staged in 1943. Jacques Tati plays the ghost; it was his first feature role, and he carries it without a word, on silhouette and movement alone.
