What The Guinea Pig Is About
After the Second World War an experiment is begun in England to bring boys of different classes together in the same school. Jack Read, from a working class family, is admitted on a scholarship to a long established private school, and the school uses him to measure whether the experiment can work; the boy notices that he is being treated as a test case. Because of his accent, his manners and his family he has to carry the looks of both the pupils and the masters. In Roy Boulting’s ninety seven minute British film the twenty four year old Richard Attenborough plays Jack, with Sheila Sim and Bernard Miles in the cast. It opened on 27 October 1948 and caused argument for using a word that had not been heard on screen before.
