What The High Cost of Living Is About
Nathalie is pregnant and living in Montreal when a hit and run in the middle of the night costs her the baby. As everything else comes apart, support turns up from an unlikely direction: a man named Henry, himself close to the bottom, starts looking after her. Why he is there is not as innocent as it looks. Deborah Chow's first feature takes a setup begging to become melodrama and plays it cold, asking how far guilt and kindness can be tangled up in each other. Isabelle Blais and Zach Braff meet in unfamiliar territory here, and Braff is not charming so much as uneasy. The question the film ends on is not whether forgiveness is possible but whose it is to give.
