What The House of the Lost on the Cape Is About
After the earthquake and tsunami that struck Tohoku in 2011, the coastal town lies in ruins. Yui takes the confusion as her chance to run from the home she lives in. At a relief centre she meets Hiyori, a small child who has lost her family. An old woman takes them both in and they settle into an old house on the headland. The woman behaves as though she were their grandmother. Shinya Kawatsura's anime is adapted from a novel by Sachiko Kashiwaba and was made as part of a project marking the tenth anniversary of the disaster. The telling does not put the catastrophe on screen; its subject is learning to live together again after grief. Local folk tales work their way into the story, and the house stands as a character in its own right. The tone is gentle and healing.
