What The Lawless Is About
Larry, who owns the newspaper in a small California town, decides not to look away from what is being done to the Mexican American seasonal workers who live by picking fruit. After a brawl at a dance a Mexican American youth runs, and the charges piled on him grow behind him; the town’s anger turns towards a lynching. When the newspaperman is left the only voice standing with the boy, the crowd turns on him instead and his press takes its share. In Joseph Losey’s eighty three minute American film, Macdonald Carey and Gail Russell appear, and it is the young Lalo Ríos’s first film. It was completed in 1950, just before the years in which Losey would be blacklisted and leave America.
