The Night Affair

Vallois is a vice inspector with the Paris police. Investigating a killing at a nightclub, he comes across a young woman called Lucky. She is an addict, and Vallois sees her as a victim rather than a criminal. He does not let it go; he sets about getting her treated and off the drug. Something starts between them along the way, and the inspector is caught between his job and what he feels. As the investigation goes on, it leads him to the ring that made her an addict. Gilles Grangier directs, with Jean Gabin as Vallois and Nadja Tiller as Lucky, and Danielle Darrieux in the cast. Ninety-three minutes. The dialogue is by Michel Audiard. This is Gabin in his fifties policier vein: tired, sardonic, and working to his own rules.
