What The Old Guard Is About
Three old friends decide to leave their village and check themselves into a retirement home. The trouble is that the road there offers far too many reasons to stop: bars, old scores, a detour to the cemetery, people they used to know. The place they say they are going to and the place they do not want to reach are the same place, and none of them says so out loud. Gilles Grangier adapts a novel into a comedy that puts Jean Gabin, Pierre Fresnay and Noël-Noël on the same road, which is really the whole idea. Old age here is not pitiable. It is stubborn and foul-mouthed.
