What The Princess with the Golden Star Is About
Princess Lada's father decides to marry her to a cruel king she wants nothing to do with. She runs, wraps herself in a cloak of mouse fur so that nobody will recognise her, and takes work as a servant at the court of a neighbouring country, hiding the golden star on her forehead underneath it. The young prince there starts wondering who is inside the servant's clothes. Martin Frič's 1959 Czech fairy tale is one of the films the country has watched every Christmas for generations. It follows the rules of Czech fairy tale cinema: real locations, plain telling, villainy that is never overplayed. Marie Kyselková plays Lada. It is also read as the story of a girl refusing a forced marriage.
