What Darbujan and Pandrhola Is About
Kuba Dařbuján, a poor miner, is trying to feed his wife Markýtka and eleven children. When a new baby arrives he looks for a godfather; he refuses both God and the Devil as unjust to people and settles on Death, who treats everyone by the same measure. The bargain is this: Kuba will be a healer, and he can cure a patient if Death stands at the foot of the bed, but nothing will work if Death stands at the head. In the end Kuba cures even the miserly brewer Pandrhola, breaks the bargain and shuts Death away, and a world where nobody can die brings chaos nobody expected. Martin Frič directed, from a tale Jan Drda wrote out of Czech folk motifs. Jiří Sovák plays Kuba and Rudolf Hrušínský plays Pandrhola.
