What The Emperor and the Golem Is About
The Emperor Rudolf is running the country badly and his court is plotting to remove him. His own concerns are his imaginary illnesses and the legendary Golem, which he believes will both protect him and cure him. Then one night he disappears on a spree. At exactly that moment the kindly baker who is his double is taken for him and put on the throne, and the baker begins setting things right. The conspirators, not to be outdone, set about bringing the Golem to life for their own purposes. Martin Frič directs, with Jan Werich playing both the emperor and the baker. It is one of the early Czechoslovak colour films and runs close to two and a half hours. It puts Prague's Golem legend together with comedy.
