What The Unsinkable Molly Brown Is About
Adapted from Meredith Willson's Broadway musical, this follows Margaret Brown from a Colorado mining camp to the doorstep of a Denver society she tries to open by sheer force of personality. Debbie Reynolds was not the studio's first choice, yet the part brought her the only Oscar nomination of her career; she lost to Julie Andrews for Mary Poppins, one of six nominations the picture collected. Charles Walters pushes the material out of the drawing room and into wide open country, and Reynolds plays at a volume that occasionally swamps the film, which is arguably the character's whole problem too. The Titanic arrives late and briefly. Who it is for: admirers of MGM musicals and unrestrained star turns. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a Titanic story, since the ship only surfaces in the final act.
