Walk Don't Run

During the Tokyo Olympics there is not a room to be had in the city. A British businessman manages to rent part of a young woman's apartment, then sublets his own corner of it to an athlete on the American Olympic team. Three people try to live in one flat while the older man does everything he can to push the young pair together. The film is a remake of The More the Merrier from 1943. What makes it interesting is not the why but the who: Cary Grant plays not the man falling in love but the one arranging it, and this was his last film. He was sixty two and had decided the era of romancing women half his age was over. It was also the final film for the director, Charles Walters. Its flaw is rhythm. The crowded Olympic city is used well visually, but the comedy repeats itself and the middle section sags. Who it is for: anyone who wants to see Cary Grant's farewell. Who it is not for: viewers looking for an original comedy.
