Kurt Waldheim What The Waldheim Waltz Is About
Ruth Beckermann’s 2018 documentary is about the emergence of Kurt Waldheim’s wartime past during his campaign for the Austrian presidency in 1986. Allegations about the former UN Secretary-General arrived one after another from the World Jewish Congress, the Austrian political class denied them, and the reaction that followed made both antisemitism and a defensive nationalism plainly visible. Waldheim won the election. Beckermann built the film entirely out of television archive from the seventies and eighties, including footage she had shot herself at the time. It won the documentary prize in the Berlinale Forum.
