What The White Cliffs of Dover Is About
Susan, an American, travels to England on holiday with her father, meets Sir John Ashwood at a ball and marries him quickly, though she never entirely settles into the English gentry. When the First World War comes John goes to the front and does not return. Years later, when her son goes off to the Second World War, Susan is afraid the same thing will happen again. Clarence Brown made the film in 1944 while the war was still running and its purpose is not hidden: to make England feel like America's own business to an American audience. That is worth knowing going in. Irene Dunne plays Susan, with Roddy McDowall and Van Johnson in the cast.
