What Three Stories Is About
Kira Muratova’s 1997 film tells three murders in a row, none of which brings any consequence. In the first, a man finds a former schoolmate working in a boiler house and tries to talk him into burning the body of the neighbour he has just killed. In the second, an orphaned woman takes a job in the archives of a maternity hospital, locates the mother who abandoned her, befriends her and pushes her into the sea. In the third, an elderly intellectual sets out to explain to a five-year-old the squalor of her existence, and she poisons him. The intertitles between them make ironic reference to Chekhov, Shakespeare and Schubert. Renata Litvinova both acts in it and co-wrote it.
