What The Asthenic Syndrome Is About
Kira Muratova's 1989 film is remembered as the last film banned in the Soviet Union. It comes in two parts: the first, in black and white, follows a woman who has just lost her husband and attacks everyone around her; that part then turns out to be a film within the film, and in the second we follow Nikolai, a teacher seized by fits of falling asleep, after a screening the audience walks out of. What Muratova builds is a portrait of a society's exhaustion: indifference, shouting, nobody hearing anyone. The film contains real footage of dogs in a shelter, and that sequence is very hard to watch. Smuggled out of the Soviet Union, it reached the 1990 Berlin Film Festival and won a Silver Bear there.
