What Tokyo Ghoul Is About
In Tokyo, flesh-eating creatures called ghouls live among people. Ken Kaneki, a university student, goes on a date with a girl he likes and learns she is a ghoul when he is badly injured. Surgery transplants her organs into him, and Kaneki becomes something between the two: half human, half ghoul. He can no longer eat ordinary food, and anything but human flesh makes him sick. The film is interested not in the transformation but in how the hunger is to be carried. Kaneki refuses to be a ghoul and tries to stay human by refusing to eat, and the story asks how long that can go on. The ghouls who guide him at a café called Anteiku are people who have found ways of living without killing. Kentaro Hagiwara directed. Masataka Kubota plays Kaneki and Fumika Shimizu plays Touka. The source is Sui Ishida's manga. The adaptation takes only the first part of the source and skims past many characters, which is the biggest shortfall for anyone who knows the comic. Who it is for: readers of Tokyo Ghoul and anyone curious about live-action manga adaptations. Who it is not for: newcomers starting here. The world goes underexplained, the effects are uneven, and most of the characters pass through in a single scene.
