Too Beautiful for You

Bernard's life is flawless: a successful car dealership, a fine house and a wife everyone admires, Florence. Then something begins with Colette, a temporary secretary at the showroom. Colette looks ordinary, is untidy, comes nowhere near Florence in any respect, and Bernard cannot explain it to himself either. Bertrand Blier takes desire's refusal to follow logic as his direct subject and lets his characters turn to camera and talk from time to time. Gérard Depardieu, Josiane Balasko and Carole Bouquet star. Schubert's music becomes the film's second voice. It took the Grand Prix at Cannes and swept the Césars in France. Who it is for: viewers who like French marriage drama and formal play. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a clear moral conclusion.
