What Umberto Eco: A Library of the World Is About
Davide Ferrario’s documentary walks through Umberto Eco’s private library in Milan, fifty thousand volumes, with Eco himself as the guide. It combines new material with footage Ferrario shot with Eco in 2015 for an installation at the Venice Biennale, and it opens with the video of the library that had gone around online. Once Eco starts talking the shelves turn out to be a pretext: he is on the value of reading books nobody respects, the origins of fascism, the state of mind of the conspiracy theorist, reading on paper against reading on a screen, and the necessity of throwing away useless memories. His wife Renate Eco-Ramge and his children Carlotta and Stefano also appear. It had its world premiere at the Rome Film Festival.
