What West and Soda Is About

A greedy landowner is forcing a young woman to marry him so he can take her land, and just then a stranger rides into town. The setup is familiar on purpose: the film is built on western clichés so it can knock every one of them over. It was Bruno Bozzetto's first animated feature, and one of the films that opened up the angular, sardonic strand of Italian animation that owes nothing to Disney. From the gunfight to the cowboy ballad, each convention gets exaggerated until it collapses. It looks like a children's cartoon and the jokes are aimed at adults. That it was made just as the spaghetti western was taking off makes it stranger still.
