What Yotsuya Ghost Story Part 2 Is About
The second part begins where the first film ended. Iemon disposes of the bodies of his wife and of Kohei, makes a marriage into a family above his own and tries to build his life again. But Naosuke begins to press him with what he knows, and the past will not let him go. The film rests on the best known ghost story of the Japanese stage and builds its fear less through spectacle than through guilt. Kinoshita turns the ghost itself into a question of conscience. The account leans on what the first part established and stays incomplete when watched on its own. Kinuyo Tanaka and Keiji Sada appear in Keisuke Kinoshita’s seventy three minute Japanese film, completed in 1949.
