What A Boy and His Samurai Is About
A samurai from the Edo period turns up in present day Japan, by a means nobody bothers to explain, and lands in the home of a divorced woman and her small son. The man who knows how to use a sword is soon taken with something else entirely: baking. Yoshihiro Nakamura attaches the time travel premise to the kitchen rather than to action, and what comes out is the story of a working mother, a boy growing up without a father, and a stranger looking for a place. It keeps its comic register throughout without cheapening the feeling, or making the choices easy.
