What A Woman of Affairs Is About
Clarence Brown made this silent picture as a Greta Garbo vehicle, adapting Michael Arlen's scandalous 1924 novel The Green Hat. The book was considered so unacceptable in the United States that the film's title was changed, the characters were renamed, and everything touching drugs, disease and homosexuality was cut out of the screenplay. What remains is the triangle of three childhood friends, Diana, Neville and David; Diana's father intervenes, the marriage is made differently than she wanted, and a catastrophe soon after the wedding pulls her down. That is what makes the film strange and interesting: the intertitles say what the censors required while the images go on telling another story entirely. Garbo and John Gilbert are paired again.
