Andrew McLaren J Jase Willette What Battle for Haditha Is About
In 2005 a roadside bomb in Haditha, Iraq, killed an American Marine; twenty-four civilians, women and children among them, were then killed in their homes. Broomfield tells it from three sides at once: the men who planted the bomb, a family living in that neighbourhood, and the Marines of the company. He makes nobody wholly right or wholly monstrous, and shows how fear, the chain of command and the urge to retaliate combined. The Marines are played by former soldiers who really served in Iraq. The violence is explicit; the case ended with almost no punishment.
