What BECK Is About

Yukio is an ordinary high school student who spends his days trying not to get beaten up. Then he meets Ryusuke, an extraordinary guitarist carrying a guitar with a strange history. Together with Taira, Chiba and Saku they form a band called BECK. They start in small venues and then things get bigger. As the band becomes known, what Ryusuke left behind in America comes after them. Yukihiko Tsutsumi directs, adapting Harold Sakuishi's manga, with Takeru Satoh as Yukio and Hiro Mizushima as Ryusuke. Two hours and twenty-five minutes. The film's most argued-over choice is this: whenever Yukio sings, his voice is never heard, and the camera stays outside looking in.
