What Big Shot's Funeral Is About
Don Tyler, a world-famous American director, falls ill while shooting in the Forbidden City and slips into a coma. Before that he had asked something odd of Yo Yo, his Chinese cameraman: to arrange him a funeral people could laugh at. Yo Yo takes the job on, but the cost is enormous. He finds a solution too, and sells the ceremony to sponsors. Past a certain point there is an advertisement on every square centimetre around the coffin. Feng Xiaogang's Chinese comedy has Donald Sutherland as Don Tyler and Ge You as Yo Yo. The film makes fun of advertising, sponsorship and the idea that anything at all can be sold, and it does so at precisely the moment China was opening to the market.
