We Girls

Gao Yuexiang’s daughter needs a hearing implant. The cost of it is beyond what the family can find. To get the money the woman takes a risk and ends up in prison. Inside she meets other women; each has a temper of her own, but none of them will give in. A theatre troupe formed in the prison brings them together. When their sentences end they try to build a life again outside. What the film mainly looks at is what comes after release; the outside is no easier than the inside. The account describes the women not by their offences but by the solidarity they build. Zhao Liying takes the lead in Feng Xiaogang’s Chinese film of 2025, a hundred and twenty four minutes long.
