What Back to 1942 Is About
In 1942 a great famine struck Henan province in China and at least two million people died. The drought was only the start; then came locusts, disease, the war and the decisions of an administration that went on requisitioning grain. The film tells the disaster through refugees on the roads, and takes in the reporting of Theodore White, the American journalist who brought it to the world's attention. Feng Xiaogang gives a hundred and forty-five minutes to a catastrophe Chinese cinema had not much discussed. Not a sentimental war epic but a hard look at what hunger reduces people to.
