BoBoiBoy: Elemental Heroes

Nizam Razak's 2019 Malaysian animation is the second feature drawn from a long-running series. BoBoiBoy and his friends have to stand against an old enemy who wants to take back control of the elemental powers. The film is built for a young audience, but the action passages are given wide space. Each character holds a different elemental power and the fights are staged around combining them; the narrative keeps teamwork in the foreground. The production was counted among the largest-scale works of the Malaysian animation industry and opened in many countries across the region. The visual design is colourful and the pace high. Who it's for: family animation and children who follow the series. Who it's not for: adult viewers new to it; the film begins without introducing its characters or its rules.
