What Doraemon: Nobita and the Kingdom of Clouds Is About
Tsutomu Shibayama's 1992 animated film is among the most openly environmental entries in the Doraemon series. When Nobita wonders whether heaven exists, Doraemon suggests they build their own country above the clouds; there they meet a civilisation already living in them. The cloud people are planning a flood because of the damage humans have done to nature, and at that point the story sets a moral dilemma: the children must both defend their own kind and accept the criticism. For a children's film at the start of the nineties that is unusually direct. The section on extinct animals is among the series' saddest passages. Who it's for: families who follow the Doraemon series and anyone looking for environmentally themed children's films. Who it's not for: adults new to the series, or anyone wanting a light children's film.
