What Doraemon: Nobita in the Wan-Nyan Spacetime Odyssey Is About
Tsutomu Shibayama's 2004 animated film is among the last works of the long-standing voice cast of the Doraemon series. Nobita believes he has sent stray animals three hundred million years into the past; arriving there, he meets a civilisation built by cats and dogs. The idea is that an intervention made in good faith created another world, and the question of whose responsibility that is. The series' familiar template joins here to a threat from the environment and an asteroid. The emotional weight comes from Nobita's bond with a dog he left in the past, and that passage is among the series' most remembered. It runs long and the middle section is slow. Who it's for: families who follow the Doraemon series and anyone looking for the classic voice cast. Who it's not for: adults new to the series, or anyone wanting a complex story.
