What Doraemon: The Record of Nobita's Parallel Journey to the West Is About

The school is putting on a play of Journey to the West and everyone wants the part of the Monkey King. Nobita, reasoning that the story is only a legend anyway, suggests fetching the real Monkey King, and he and Doraemon travel back in time. But when they return to the present, the demons from that story have taken over the world. For anything to be put right, Nobita and his friends will have to live the legend through, for real, from beginning to end. Tsutomu Shibayama's Doraemon film is counted among the darker entries in the series; although it is made for children it contains an occupied city, transformed adults and genuinely dangerous scenes. The classic Chinese novel Journey to the West and the idea of time travel are threaded through each other. Nobita's incompetence is once again both what starts the story and what ends it.
