What Doraemon: Nobita's Great Adventure in the World of Magic Is About
Carried away by fantasy stories, Nobita uses one of Doraemon's gadgets to wish that magic were real in the world. The wish is granted, but the world he has made does not turn out as he expected. Magic is now an ordinary profession with its own rules and its own bureaucracy, and Nobita is somebody who knows nothing inside that arrangement. On top of that, demons living underground are preparing to take the world. Tsutomu Shibayama's Doraemon film is counted among the darkest and best loved entries in the series. Although it is a children's film it comes genuinely close to hopelessness and does not shy away from showing what losing means. Magic here is not a gift but a difficult thing that has to be learned. The structure of the film rests on carrying the consequences of a wish all the way to the end.
