What Doraemon: Nobita and the Spiral City Is About
Nobita and Doraemon win a small planet in a lottery. They have a winding key that brings anything to life; they wind up their toys and leave them on the planet. In time a toy city grows there that runs itself. But as the city gets bigger it goes out of control, and the order the children set up is taken out of their hands. Tsutomu Shibayama's anime is the 1997 link in the long-running Doraemon film series. Drawn from the comic, the series puts out a film a year in Japan and has been watched by generations. This entry works through the idea of creation and responsibility at a child's level: starting something is easy, carrying the consequences is hard. The tone is playful but the ending is serious.
