What Flamenco Is About
Carlos Saura sets out thirteen rhythms of flamenco, each with its song, its guitar and its dance: the fast bulerias, a brooding farruca, a heavy martinete, a satirical fandango de Huelva. There are tangos, a taranta, alegrias, siguiriyas, soleas, a guajira of patrician women, a petenera about a death sentence, villancicos and a rumba to close. There are no interviews and no commentary; the performance is the whole of it. Saura shot in an old railway station in Seville fitted out with mirrors, and some three hundred singers, dancers and musicians pass through it. Vittorio Storaro photographed it. Paco de Lucia, Enrique Morente, Manolo Sanlucar, Joaquin Cortes, Tomatito and Carmen Linares are among the performers.
