What Giacomo Casanova: Childhood and Adolescence Is About
The film covers Giacomo Casanova's childhood and youth. An unhappy childhood in Venice, school years in Padua, then a career begun as a churchman. Casanova leaves that road because of his love for a countess. But the plans to run away come to nothing; he realises he does not want to be bound to anyone and takes up the life of a wanderer. Luigi Comencini's film is adapted from the first five chapters of Casanova's own memoirs, with a screenplay by Suso Cecchi d'Amico. Leonard Whiting plays the young Casanova. The film makes no secret of what it is after: the subject is not a list of conquests but the hypocrisy of eighteenth-century Venice. Religion, medicine and the rules of behaviour are criticised in equal measure.
