What Houdini Is About
Tony Curtis plays Houdini and Janet Leigh, then his wife, plays Bess, and the film is at its most enjoyable staging the escapes and the theatre that surrounded them. As biography it cannot be trusted, and its largest invention is the ending, which has Houdini fail to get out of the Chinese Water Torture Cell and die on stage. That is not what happened. He performed that escape from 1912 onward without incident, and died on 31 October 1926 of peritonitis following a ruptured appendix. Watch the film, but do not learn his death from it.
