What You Can't Cheat an Honest Man Is About
Larsen E. Whipsnade owns a ramshackle circus permanently one step ahead of the law, trying to stay just clear of foreclosure and paying nobody in his show. Among the unpaid are the ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his dummy Charlie McCarthy, who look for a way to get their money, McCarthy simply by stealing it. Whipsnade’s loathing of McCarthy is the running joke the film works hardest. W. C. Fields both stars and wrote the story it comes from, under the pen name Charles Bogle. Universal released it in February 1939, with the direction split between George Marshall and Edward F. Cline. It is among the best known pieces of Fields comedy.
