Hurricane Touchdown

Shigeyasu Yamauchi's 2000 animation is the feature belonging to the Digimon Adventure 02 period and was shown in Japan in two parts. When the older children are abducted by the mysterious Kokomon, the next generation goes to rescue them alongside the American DigiDestined Willis, and the enemy turns out to have an unexpected connection to him. The story rests on one of the series' constant themes: a digital being corrupted by its creator's mistake. The visual language moves beyond the budget limits of the television show, with the handling of clouds and light and the scenes about Willis's past standing out. In America this film was recut together with another Digimon feature, and that version largely wrecked the story; the original Japanese cut is far more coherent. Who it's for: viewers who follow the Digimon series and are interested in feature adaptations of 2000s Japanese television animation. Who it's not for: anyone unfamiliar with the series who will not know the characters, or expecting a self-contained story.
