What In the Affirmative Is About

A middle aged man picks up a young woman on the road. The two of them travel on together. News bulletins run on the car radio: a criminal has escaped, and young women and children are who he goes after. That news pulls every sentence between them somewhere else. The woman may suspect the man, and the man knows it. Claude Lelouch cuts away from the account now and then to other events. Those pieces are not tied directly to the story, but they make visible what the radio suggests. The film builds its tension not out of an event but out of suspicion itself. The eighty five minutes pass on a single journey. Claude Lelouch’s French film was completed in 1964.
