What Jaatishwar Is About
Srijit Mukherji’s 2014 Bengali film runs in two periods at once. Rohit, a Gujarati, is researching the life of Anthony Firingee, the Portuguese-descended singer who lived in nineteenth-century Bengal, and in the course of it meets Kushal Hazra, a mysterious man taken to be someone who remembers a previous life. The title says as much: a jaatishwar is a person who recalls a former birth. It is built as a music film, and Bengal’s hardened tradition of sung verse contests carries the questions of language, religion and belonging. Prosenjit Chatterjee holds both halves of it. Jisshu Sengupta, Swastika Mukherjee and Mamata Shankar are also in it, across a hundred and fifty minutes.
