What Joe Cocker: Mad Dog with Soul Is About
A man working as a gas fitter in Sheffield walks onto the stage at Woodstock in 1969, sings the Beatles song With a Little Help from My Friends, and becomes a global star overnight. By the early seventies drink and drugs have nearly finished him. Then he gets back up and spends the rest of his life on stage. John Edginton's documentary assembles Cocker's own recordings, the family archive and rare performance footage. His wife Pam Cocker, Rita Coolidge, Randy Newman, Jimmy Webb and Billy Joel all speak. It stays out of eulogy and explains the addiction and the source of that strange, contorted stance on stage as parts of the same thing. Cocker died in 2014.
