What Julio Begins in July Is About
At the turn of the century, in the landowning upper class of Chile, a father decides to mark his son’s passage into manhood with a ceremony, and buys a young woman for the purpose. Silvio Caiozzi’s film presents that ritual as a direct product of the culture of domination built by the great estates. Shooting began in 1976 and took three years, and the result became one of the very few Chilean features completed and released during the first decade of the Pinochet dictatorship. Written by Gustavo Frias, it won the Golden Columbus at Huelva in 1979 and the prize of the Chilean art critics’ circle, and screened in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes. In a 1999 public vote organised by the municipality of Santiago it was named the best Chilean film of the twentieth century.
