Kites

J teaches dance in Las Vegas and makes money marrying immigrants for papers. He plans to move up by getting engaged to his boss's daughter. Then he meets Natasha, engaged to the same man's son, and realises he married her himself years earlier in one of those arrangements. The two of them run. The most striking thing is language. J speaks English and Hindi, Natasha speaks Spanish, and they do not understand each other, so the relationship is built almost entirely without words. Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori play them. The production has a story too. To reach international audiences a separate ninety minute version was released under Brett Ratner's supervision as Kites: The Remix, while the Hindi cut runs a hundred and thirty minutes. Against a budget of eighty two crore it took sixty five, and was treated as a major failure. Its flaw is that the second half turns into a chase and loses its emotional ground. Who it is for: viewers who like visually ambitious Bollywood romance. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a coherent screenplay.
