What Life in a Metro Is About
Nine lives touch each other in Mumbai: a woman having an affair with her boss, a clerk who rents out his flat for his colleagues' assignations, a couple on the point of divorce, a woman who works in a hospital, and two older people who meet again after many years. Anurag Basu starts from the idea The Apartment established but puts Mumbai's own logic, the absence of space, at the centre. Its most original quality is the use of music: Pritam and his band play inside the scene, visible in frame, so the songs do not interrupt but run over the story. The cast includes Irrfan Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Kay Kay Menon and Shilpa Shetty. Irrfan's strand is the most remembered part. Who it is for: viewers who like multi-strand city drama and realistic relationships in Indian cinema. Who it is not for: anyone expecting all the strands to be equally strong.
