In Dinos Dimopoulos’s 1960 Greek film, Aliki Vougiouklaki plays Madalena, seventeen years old and obliged to take over the family ferry business when her father dies. She has a houseful of younger brothers and sisters to keep and a rival operator to beat, and she goes at both with more hardness than anyone expects of her. The complication is the rival’s good-looking son, and the film runs on Madalena’s refusal to admit what she feels about him. Walter Lassally shot it and Manos Hatzidakis wrote the music. It won three prizes at the first Thessaloniki festival and represented Greece at Cannes the following year. The prizes were for screenplay, lead actress and supporting actor.
