Michael Jackson: Live at Wembley July 16, 1988

The complete record of Michael Jackson's concert at Wembley Stadium on 16 July 1988. It is not a compilation but exactly what happened on stage that night: one of the most cited evenings of the Bad tour, played to a sold-out crowd of seventy-two thousand. The recording came out of Jackson's own archive and was only officially released years later, which is why the image quality is that of period television rather than a polished concert film. Its value is the chance to watch Jackson's stage work uninterrupted at its height. The band includes Jennifer Batten on guitar and Greg Phillinganes on keyboards, and the musical arrangement of the tour still holds up. That Prince Charles and Princess Diana attended shaped how the night is remembered in Britain. Who it's for: viewers interested in Michael Jackson's stagecraft and the aesthetics of the 1980s stadium concert. Who it's not for: anyone expecting high image quality, or looking for context and narrative about the performer's life.
