What Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island Is About
Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's 2022 anime follows the pilot Amuro, stranded on an island after a covert mission. The unit was sent to clear the island of enemy forces; there they find a group of children and a single former soldier caring for them. The subject is leaving a side in the war. The man on the island has withdrawn from the fighting and is raising the children; Amuro is caught between seeing him as an enemy and agreeing with him, and the narrative vindicates neither position. The episode had been told once during the series' television period and was known for its technical shortcomings; Yasuhiko chose to make it again. The animation is kept close to hand drawing and the island sequences are wide. Who it's for: viewers following the Gundam universe. Who it's not for: viewers new to the series; the film assumes knowledge of earlier events and characters.
