What Arion Is About

Arion is taken by Hades as a child and raised underground. The story he is told goes like this: Zeus blinded his mother, and killing the ruler of Olympus will cure her. Arion grows up in that belief and learns to fight. When he comes up to the surface he falls into the war of the gods and starts questioning how much of what he was told is true. Yoshikazu Yasuhiko adapted his own manga and directed the film. Yasuhiko is known as the character designer on Gundam; here the hand-drawn crowd battles and the detailed backgrounds make one of the most ambitious pieces of Japanese animation of the eighties. Greek mythology is not taken as it stands but rewritten: the gods here are not sacred but beings who use each other to hold power.
